10/21 Next Week in Band

10/19/2019

Hello Band Families,

That’s wrap folks!  Well, for marching season anyway.  It has been an amazing season and they did so well this year and our show was fantastic!  Just like every year since I began my involvement with the Emerald Regiment, I am always sad when it’s over-my daughter is too.  Last year, when the marching season ended, she went through a period of letdown that took me by surprise. They are so busy and things are moving so fast then suddenly, it’s over.  They miss their friends, they miss the crazy schedule (trust me, they do), but mostly I think they miss the camaraderie that comes with being a member of the marching band. Someone said to me just the other day, “you don’t realize how important these friendships are until they aren’t there anymore.”  I think this is a big part of the sadness my daughter experienced when last year’s season was over. Suddenly, she wasn’t seeing all 100+ of her friends every single day and she missed them. So just know, for our new parents, this may happen. It really helped to jump right into another activity that kept her busy.  She signed up for winter guard and then swimming and all was well in the Krone household.

This week also marks the last “This week in band” as we will transition to “This month in band” beginning the first of the year.  We will have informational emails sprinkled in at various times throughout the month but the only scheduled email will go out on or around the 1st.  There will be no email in December nor is there a booster meeting so make sure you attend the November 5th (not 12th) meeting to hear the preparations for the new year.

FROM MR. LESANDO
We have been invited to another amazing opportunity this year - performing an exhibition for another high school's competition. We do not compete in this show but we are the "big band" that is brought in to display a level of to the activity that is not a commonality amongst the other bands attending. This is a true honor as this type of performance is usually reserved for the college and military marching bands.  This event will take place during the late morning/early afternoon of October 23rd. Students will eat an early lunch at SW and will be bussed to perform and return at the beginning of 5th hour.

I would also like to take a second and thank you all for a fantastic marching season. Your support for me, the staff, and your students is unmatched by most school band programs. I’m proud to see the growth in your students and our organization. We work hard and for a reason and it has paid off not only in public recognition but in the growth, maturity, and confidence that I see in all of our band kids every day. When I say that band programs like these are uncommon, it is true. We are fortunate to have an extremely supportive administration and a culture at the school that makes the BVSW band something special and unique for our students to be involved with.

REMINDERS
  • Homecoming game, bonfire: students report to the band room at 6:15 pm and grab instruments and get into lines to walk to the performance area.  Wear Polos. At 6:45, students will march up the hill to the bonfire spot, perform a part of the show, fight song and alma mater, then be dismissed around 7:30 pm.
  • Sign up to work concessions for homecoming here.
  • All student accounts should be settled by now.  Please send in any remaining balance you may have.  Unpaid dues are an expense the band does not budget for and could potentially cause a rise in next year's dues for the entire band if not resolved. Payment of band dues is required by all as stated in the fee agreement contract you signed when your student joined the marching band.
    •  If you need financial assistance with dues, please email Mr. Lesando to discuss options.
    •  If you are unsure of your remaining balance, please email Pam Dorsch.
  • BAND UNIFORM PICTURES: Thursday, October 24th @ 8 am (during late start). The pictures are taken by PEC Sports Photography. Students were given an order form in class on Monday. Extra order forms can be found in the band room. ALL students are required to be there for the FULL band picture. Additional photos can be taken for individuals, sections, friends, etc. You can also order online at pecsports.info.
  • Next booster meeting has been moved to Nov. 5th, 7 pm, Orchestra Room

  • LETTER CAMPAIGN: Directors and Boosters will be working with the students on October 22nd to put letters together. Please see the attached PROOF of the letter that students will be sending. The language is the same, pictures and layout have minor changes to accommodate printing. This is a great way to reach out to family and friends who want to support your student, but don’t live close and direct sales items or local fundraisers aren’t feasible for them. This direct donate campaign has the potential to raise $10,000! Please join our efforts! A proof of the letter is in our Members tab.

QUESTIONS? Please contact Kelly Ketner.

UNIFORMS
There is only a week left of marching, but we want to look sharp for the last performances. Students need to fill out the sheet that is posted inside the band room door if there is a uniform that needs repair. We will take care of this if we know about it (as soon as possible).

PROPS/SCHLEPPING
  • Wednesday, October 23rd
We will need some help when our band performs in exhibition at Spring Hill on Wednesday the 23rd  It’s a pretty quick process.  We’ll meet at Spring Hill High School at the corner of 199th and Ridgeview (we are typically in the far east parking lot) about 10:15.  We will unload the trailers and set up the props for the band to arrive around 11.  By noon the exhibition is over and we’ll be loading the trailers up to head back to BVSW.
For anyone who has time, we could use some help loading the trailers at BVSW about 9:00 when the band finishes their morning practice.  But we’ll need the most help at Spring Hill High School unloading and reloading there. Call or text Michael Crain at 231-631-3570 or Kerry Hafner at 913-707-4554 with any questions.
  • Friday, October 25th
It’s the final home football game.  We’ll load the trucks after school as usual then head to the stadium where we’ll arrive in the east parking lot about 5:30 to unload and set up the props.  We will need help with the unloading of the instruments and props as soon as we arrive so the band can get their instruments and get to where they should be.  After the performance is over we can use some hands once again to break down and load up for the trip back to BVSW.    Thank you so much to everyone who has helped throughout this year.  We have really appreciated it.
